Before you start signing, it’s important to warm up your voice. If you were running a race, you would stretch your muscles in preparation. It's the same with singing. Having a warmup routine to stretch your vocal cords is always a good idea for both health reasons and for improving your singing skills. It will strengthen and protect your voice. An effective warm-up helps you get comfortable before you sing the high notes in a song.
A vocal warm-up can be different for everyone. Make sure you start with a good posture. You need to be completely relaxed as well, no tension whatsoever because it affects your singing. Never force anything. If it hurts, you're doing it wrong. That's the basis for everything.
I like to start with some lip trills and hums. This loosens up the face and eliminates tension.
After that, you could start singing upward and downward scales. A fun one is "Mommy made me mash my m&m's" as an articulation exercise.
Besides a physical warm-up, it's a good idea to mentally preparing your mind as well. Some won't need it, but since I do, I want to share this with you as well.
When you start by thinking you won't reach the high notes, you won't. It's as simple as that. When you believe in yourself and have enough confidence, it will make things a lot easier.
I like to watch the videos of vocal coach Cheryl Porter on YouTube. I Love her enhousiasm and the way she makes you feel good from the moment you see her. You can find one of her vocal warm-up exercises in the video below.
